Apple Cider Vinegar For Cough(1)

Apple Cider Vinegar For Cough(1)Struggling with a cough is horrible. Not only can it cause a sore throat if you don’t already have one in which case it can become unbearable, but it can interfere with your sleep too and it’s never nice to be the one disrupting everyone else. A cough can be caused by many things.

Something may have irritated your lungs or throat such as when you have allergies or breathe in something that your body wants to protect you against, it can also be caused by viruses or bacteria, you may also have a build-up of mucus. Your cough will be either wet or dry. Dry coughs can sometimes be worse than the wet coughs because there is no mucus to protect your chest and throat.

Apple cider vinegar also abbreviated as ACV is a popular ingredient in many home remedies including those for coughing.

Can You Really Use Apple Cider Vinegar For Cough?

The use of ACV for cough specifically is not really substantiated by science as with many other health benefits apple cider vinegar is said to have, but when you are struggling with colds, flu, or a pesky cough, apple cider vinegar may help in the following way:

  • Apple cider vinegar makes your body more alkaline due to its potassium content which makes your body a bad environment for pathogens resulting in you getting better quicker.
  • Apple cider vinegar also has antimicrobial properties meaning it can get rid of infections. Although these viruses and bacteria don’t necessarily cause coughs, colds, or flu, keeping your body free from other infections will enable it to fight off your colds and flu more effectively.
  • Apple cider vinegar boosts nutrient uptake from other foods which is always a plus for staying healthy and giving your body the nutrients it needs to fight off illnesses.
  • Apple cider vinegar aids digestion. When your body is fighting off an illness it often diverts more energy to healing you than digestion. Giving your body a helping hand with digestion can help to keep your stomach more comfortable and makes sure that your body digests food effectively which gives it the energy and nutrients it needs.

Apple Cider Vinegar Cough Remedy Recipes

1. Home Made Cough Syrup (Apple Cider Vinegar)

This cough syrup has been found to be very effective by many people including Bonnie K. McMillen, a registered nurse. It combines apple cider vinegar with other ingredients known to fight colds and flu as well as relieve coughing and lower inflammation in the body:

  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 Tablespoons water

Mix these ingredients together. Take a teaspoon of this mixture for relief. You can try using it three times a day first to see if it helps.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Drink

Drinking this mixture before a meal is especially helpful for digestion, though you can have it at other times too. You may even prefer to sip it throughout the day. Don’t have more than two glasses of this mixture per day:

  • Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water
  • Stir in some raw honey for its antibacterial properties as well as to make it taste better.

3. Add Apple Cider Vinegar to Your Tea

While this may seem strange, it can actually add a nice flavor to your tea, particularly if you also add honey. Simply add half a teaspoon or so of apple cider vinegar to your tea. It will likely work best with tea that doesn’t have milk added to it.

Fluids are also important to thin mucus, so if you are struggling with thick mucus, making sure that you are getting enough fluids is essential (equivalent of 6-8 glasses of water, slightly more if you have a fever).

4. Add Apple Cider Vinegar to Your Food

Apple cider vinegar can add delicious flavor to your meals. Easy to digest foods like soup may be best but if your stomach is okay to handle other foods, go for it. You can try adding apple cider a little bit at a time to these foods:

  • Soup
  • Some meat dishes
  • Some types of Asian meals, particularly those using lots of vegetables, pork, or chicken
  • Salads (hot or cold)

Tips and Precautions

  • Apple cider vinegar has been known to cause burns in the throat and stomach when taken undiluted. While you can have it over your salad, when drinking it, it’s best to dilute it with water. Up to two tablespoons can be added to a glass of water, but it’s also up to you. Some people may be more sensitive than others.
  • Always use raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar.“The mother” which would be the sediment and contributes to the murky appearance of apple cider vinegar when unfiltered is what gives apple cider vinegar its added benefits.
  • If your children are a little bit older they may be willing to drink mixtures made with apple cider vinegar, but you may want to dilute it a little bit further to protect their more delicate throats and tummies.
  • When using apple cider vinegar for cough, it may be tempting to consume a lot of it throughout the day. But, too much apple cider vinegar can cause problems with your pH levels and with your potassium levels. This is why it’s recommended to drink no more than two tablespoons worth of apple cider vinegar per day.
  • Always rinse your mouth with water after drinking or eating apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and softens tooth enamel. This can lead to tooth enamel erosion.
  • While natural remedies are very effective and often safer than conventional medicine, sometimes medical treatment is necessary. If you or your loved one experience a quick increase in body temperature, a fever over 104 degrees, or start coughing up green or yellow phlegm, a trip to the doctor is recommended.
  • If you have been coughing for more than a week or so despite using effective home remedies you should see your doctor as you may require a different kind of treatment to the ones you have been trying.

Apple cider vinegar is quite healthy despite not being the miracle health remedy that it’s claimed to be and still benefits your body. Using apple cider vinegar for cough may just be what it takes to bring you relief and a good night’s sleep.
