Asthma occurs when the airway tubes become narrow and inflamed due to the buildup of excess mucous. Symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. There is no cure for asthma, but its symptoms can controlled, leading to fewer asthma attacks.

Ginger for Asthma:

Ginger is a wonderful herb used to treat many health ailments. Generally used as herbal Ayurvedic medicine in Asian cuisine, this herb not only adds flavor to food and drink but works great in treating respiratory problems like cold, flu, cough, and asthma. Use ginger in dry, raw, and fresh forms to experience relief from asthma symptoms.

  • Ginger has components such as gingerols, shogaols, and zingerones that act as anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties similar to Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • It has an anti-oxidant property that cleanses the harmful chemicals the body produces and relieves psychological stress which leads to asthma.
  • It provides a therapeutic application in allergic asthma treatment. Ginger also helps to reduce the inflammation and swelling in the respiratory passages.
  • Ginger inhibits the airway contraction and normalizes airways to enable proper breathing.
  • It has oleoresins which clear excess mucus in the windpipe and lungs, thus fighting infection.
  • It eliminates phlegm which cause itchiness in the throat. This relaxes the airways and gives a cooling sensation in the chest.
  • Ginger works by simultaneously inhibiting the enzyme that causes airway muscles to constrict and also activates an enzyme that relaxes the airways.

How to Use Ginger for Asthma:

There are several home remedies to relieve asthma using ginger that help with asthma and the associated symptoms. These remedies musts be repeated regularly to be effective.

1. Ginger

  • Wash a piece of ginger and cut into small pieces or crush to get the juice.
  • Mix with salt and consume regularly for best results.
  • Or Sprinkle ginger pieces in soups, salads, gravies, bread, etc.
  • Or eat ginger candies.

2. Ginger with Pomegranate Juice and Honey

  • Mix equal quantities of ginger juice, honey, and pomegranate juice.
  • Consume a tablespoon of this mixture 2 – 3 times daily for best results.

3. Ginger Tea

  • Rinse and peel a piece of ginger.
  • Boil the ginger pieces (or ginger powder) in a cup of water for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Add honey to enhance the flavor. It coast and soothes the throat to relieve asthma.
  • Drink the tea water 1 – 2 times daily for best results.

4. Ginger with Honey and Fenugreek Seeds

Ingredients:

  • Ginger juice – 1 tablespoon
  • Fenugreek seeds – 2 tablespoons
  • Honey – 1 tablespoon

Process:

  • Soak fenugreek seeds in water overnight.
  • The next morning, remove the seeds from the water and dry them.
  • Combine ginger juice, honey, and fenugreek seeds.
  • Drink twice daily to detoxify the lungs and to get relief from asthma and its symptoms.

5. Ginger with Walnuts

This process is based on a Chinese medication of walnuts and ginger root which clears the lungs of excessive phlegm and prevents coughing by clearing the breathing airway.

Ingredients:

  • Walnuts – 3
  • Ginger – 3 slices (freshly chopped)
  • Warm water

Process:

  • Peel the walnut and grind and grate ginger slices.
  • Steep in warm water for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Drink tea water daily before going to bed to get relief from asthma.

6. Ginger Tea with Lemongrass Flavor

Lemongrass or lemon energizes and refreshes you within few minutes.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh ginger root (Grated) – 1/4 cup
  • Lemongrass (Sliced) – 1 stalk
  • Honey – 1 teaspoon
  • Small lemon – 1
  • Herbal tea – 2 teaspoons
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Saucepan
  • Sieve or strainer

Process:

  • Boil water for few minutes over medium heat.
  • Now reduce the heat and add sliced lemongrass stalk and grated ginger.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes and turn off the heat.
  • Now add herbal tea and strain the mixture with the help of sieve or strainer.
  • Add lemon juice and honey for extra flavor.
  • Drink this to get relief from asthma.

Tips and Precautions:

  • Pour few drops of ginger oil in nebulizer that contains distilled water and inhale to clear mucus and other blockage from your windpipe.
  • Ginger generally grows in the ground, so be sure to always wash it.
  • Ginger, if taken in excess in any form, can cause side effects like heartburn, belching, acidity, nausea, and insomnia.
  • Avoid ginger if you are, undergoing an operation, or using blood thinners beta-blockers, or immune suppressants.
  • Pregnant, nursing women and children have to consult the doctor to know proper dosage.
  • Consult your healthcare provider about taking ginger supplements for proper dosage in regards to your health.
